Shura members discuss protection status for two reefs
The Public Utilities and Environment Committee of the Shura Council held talks yesterday with a number of representatives from other concerned authorities regarding a draft law on designating the Jarem and Adham reef areas as nature reserves.

Yesterday’s meeting was headed by Chairman of the committee Sadiq Abdul Karim Shehabi and included the participation of officials from the Ministry of Municipalities and Agricultural Affairs, the Ministry of Oil and Gas, and the General Authority for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife.

The bill designates the Jarem reef and Adham reef as two nature reserves in Category II of the International Classification of Natural Reserves.

The move to give the areas the status of National Park comes as the result of international conventions signed by the Kingdom regarding the protection of the marine environment and its development.

In comments carried by the Bahrain News Agency following yesterday’s meeting, Shehabi praised the participation of government officials in the meeting and stressed the importance of taking into  consideration the suggestions made by the officials when discussing the draft law during an upcoming meeting on Wednesday.
